Prior to your first wear we recommend applying a silicon-free leather protector to prevent any stains or damage, ideally a protector that is specifically made for delicate or sensitive leathers. Sheepskin leather should never be washed and where ever possible should avoid getting wet, hence the importance of waterproofing the puffer with a quality product.
Please store your leather puffer in the Mode & Affaire satin bag or hanging within a cool environment, away from both sunlight and moisture. Keep stored away from direct sunlight to prevent discolouration.
Between seasons, the satin bag is best for storage as it allows the leather to breathe and will prevent the jacket from going musty.
We recommend at the end of each season (or as regularly as possible) using a quality leather conditioner that is rich in nutrients for keeping sheep skin fibres supple and preserving the character of the leather. Leather conditioners are also useful for general cleaning and helps prevent tears.
Given the delicate and divine nature of sheep skin leather, it can tear quite easily. Your jacket is more likely to tear if it hasn’t been waterproofed and/or conditioned. Over time the leather can become more brittle and less flexible which increases the risk of a leather tear.
How to Clean Your Leather
- Clean with a damp cotton cloth use a damp clean cotton cloth to wipe of any grime or marks. Do not apply water directly or wash the leather as this may leave a watermark.
- Apply a leather conditioner dab a high quality nourishing conditioner onto a clean cotton cloth and massage into all external and internal areas of the leather.
- Waterproof the leather sheepskin leather should be waterproofed prior to wearing, apply a few coats of silicon-free water protector to the external areas of the item.
- For stains, scratches or discolouration the leather will likely require professional restoration. We suggest getting in touch with our team if you need any further information regarding caring for your coat
Keep your jacket dry. Avoid wearing your leather jacket in rainy weather. If it does get wet, make sure that you hang it out to dry immediately before putting it away.
Hang your jacket correctly. Never leave your jacket folded for a long period of time, as this can encourage creases and cracks in the leather. Instead, hang it on a wide, preferably padded hanger to prevent bumps in the shoulders. Leather is a natural, permeable material and consequently it will absorb smells. Hang in a well-ventilated wardrobe, giving it space to breath.
Keep your jacket away from heat. Heat will dry out and cause leather to become brittle and crack. Never iron or steam it yourself. Both water and heat will have the effect of drying natural oils from the leather, causing it to crack or wrinkle.
Use a leather conditioner. Leather will always naturally lose some of its moisture but using a reputable leather conditioner on finished leather can prolong its life.
